ASBESTOSLEGALCENTER.ORG CALL ON STATE LEGISLATORS AND CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN TO DECLARE SEPTEMBER 26, MESOTHELIOMA AWARENESS DAY IN CALIFORNIA.

August 22, 2011 – San Francisco, CA.  Today, AsbestosLegalCenter.org called upon state legislators, and California Governor Jerry Brown, to declare September 26, Mesothelioma Awareness Day in California.

“The data now exists, that for over twenty years California has ranked first in the nation, with respect the number of deaths caused by Mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. This is a disease that is entirely preventable.  We must remain vigilant in our efforts to both educate the public to avoid exposure to asbestos, and hold those who have caused harm to others accountable for this deadly disease.”, said asbestoslegalcenter.org attorney Raymond Mueller

The AsbestosLegalCenter.org is joining other organizations located throughout the country in the effort to create National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Mr. Mueller encouraged residents of California to email their state legislators, and the Governor, to ask them to support the issuance of the following proclamation:

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, mesothelioma is an aggressive, asbestos-related cancer that affects the linings of the lungs, abdomen, heart or testicles;

Whereas, the heavy use of asbestos in manufacturing, industry and construction has been recognized as “the worst occupational health disaster in U.S. history;

Whereas, asbestos was used in the construction of virtually all office buildings, public schools, and homes built before 1975;

Whereas, a high percentage of all mesothelioma victims are veterans were exposed to asbestos on naval ships and in shipyards;

Whereas, this is now believed to include many of the firefighters, police officers, and rescue workers from Ground Zero on 9/11/01;

Whereas, exposure to asbestos for as little as one month can result in mesothelioma 30 years later;

Whereas, because of occupational, Navy-service related, household, or even incidental exposures and the very long latency of the disease, tens of millions of Americans are now at risk for developing mesothelioma

Whereas, for decades the need for research to develop effective treatments for mesothelioma was overlooked;

Whereas, the result of this neglect is that treatments available today generally have only limited effect and most patients die within only 12 to 15 months from diagnosis;

and Whereas, the establishment of Mesothelioma Awareness Day would raise public awareness of the disease and of the need to develop effective treatments for it.

Now therefore, be it resolved that September 26, be hereby declared Mesothelioma Awareness Day in the California.

“In addition to being a great day to raise awareness of this deadly disease, Mesothelioma Awareness Day would be a solemn day for those who are currently suffering from the disease, and for those who have lost loved ones to the disease, to come together with the support of the community at large. Given all of the suffering that is associated with this disease, I can think of no reason not to support the creation of such an event.”, Mueller said.
