General Fund to pay Asbestos-victims in Libby, MO
It was origianlly thougth that the states insurance company would split the cost of a $43 million settlement to be paid to victims of asbestos who were exposed at the former W.R. Grace vermiculite mine. It has not come to light that the enitre settlement amount will be paid out of the State’s General Fund, meaning that the settlement will be paid with “taxpayer’s money”. The settlement is still pending legislative approval and final approval from the court system.
This legal battle has been ongoing since 1999, when the magnitude of asbestos exposure came to light. The claimants believe the state is responsible for not warning them of the dangers associated with asbestos-contaminated vermiculite. The vermiculite not only sickened the workers in the mine but also their family members and other residents of Libby, MO.
In addition, victims will only be a paid a maximum of $60,723 for the most severe cases of mesothelioma, the most severe asbestos related disease. Meosthelioma is a very serious and rare form of cancer caused primarily by exposure to asbstos and asbestos containing materials.

The Libby Fix, was to be for the People of Libby.The Libby Fix was wrote in 2004 and in 2005, was taken on by Senator Baucus for the Libby People and went to the US Senate for vote.Which, the Libby Fix was passed. Then the Libby Fix went to the Congress for vote and lost, by ONE vote. Had we got that one vote, we all would of got fair and just Compensation.
